All piggies that come into the rescue are under quarantine for at least 2 weeks to ensure they are fit and well enough to be rehomed. Most females have to stay longer to be sure that they are not pregnant before they are made available.
When the new arrivals have cleared their quarantine and are ready for rehoming they will appear on the 'Available for Adoption' page.

Midge, 4 months. Heavily pregnant on arrival. RehomedThis lovely little girl gave birth less than 24 hrs after arriving so a back to back repeat pregnancy was only just avoided. She had a little girl, low birth weight of 53g (average is 75-100g) plus a mummified foetus of only a few weeks gestation that had died in the womb. Very sadly the little baby passed away within 12 hrs. She weakened through the day and mum was not caring for her. Despite my help, warmth and feeding she faded away. Her poor little mum was too young and her body too small to cope with pregnancy and her babies died because of it, I am keeping a very close eye on her as well.
This is a pretty typical tale of what can happen when females and males are mixed at such a young age, as can happen with petshops, or back yard breeders that sell on Facebook or the free ads (this little mum's fate). It also happens when siblings are not separated in time. Females can conceive from 4-6 weeks, males can be potent from 3 weeks. It can be a death sentence for the babies and/or the mums.

Merrick is a lifelong resident following 2 major ops due to bite wound. |

These
two poor boys were saved and brought to the rescue by one of my piggy
mummies. They had been a child's pet, given to her school as she was
allergic to them, and left to get on with it running loose in the school
quad, a dilapidated hutch for shelter and 2 rabbits to contend with.
So they are now being treated for parasites due to long term neglect they will also need fungal
treatment too as there is evidence of ringworm.

sad little girl has arrived thanks to a friend of the rescue
getting her out of a sad existence, her cage was just months of poo
under the hastily added layer of hay, she is malnourished and
underweight. I hope to get her back to full health and rehomed with a
companion to a family that will give her the love and attention that has
been so lacking in her past.

Birth 1 - mum 14-16 weeks old; single baby, male; emergency vet needed for delivery, mum very lucky to survive pneumonia and the birth. Baby partly handreared. Scarring to lung tissue caused mum complications at 6 months old, died from URI.
Birth 2 - mum 16-18 weeks old; 2 babies, 1 male, 1 female; normal delivery. No complications.
Birth 3 - mum 16-18 weeks old; 2 babies, 1 male, 1 female; normal delivery. Mum extremely poorly after the birth, 2 weeks intensive care, babies handreared.
Birth 4 - mum 26-36 weeks old; 2 babies, 1 male, 1 female; normal delivery, no complications.
All rehomed apart from mum 3, Magdalena, now a lifelong resident.

As part of an huge ongoing rescue of 285 guinea pigs the Piggy Bank (a new guinea pig rescue network) has helped with 120 boars, moving them around the country to rescue spaces so they all get the correct treatment and can be rehomed. Without organisations like the Piggy Bank many large rescue situations like this would end up with the pigs being put to sleep as it is almost impossible for any single organisation to cope with such a large number.
Although Glynneath GPR is already over capacity, in situations like this every cage counts so I took in 13. They are in full quarantine in my shed, which is generally only used during the summer months, as these pigs have been living outside/in unheated sheds in rather poor conditions the GGPR shed will feel like heaven!

UPDATE: - 2 weeks on and this little girl's skin has healed, hair regrowth has started but she still needs to wear her protective jacket to prevent her damaging her skin again.
23/4/12 - sadly after 3 months of treatment the decision was made for this little girl to be PTS. This is only the third pig that the rescue has made this choice for, it was a very difficult decision to end her suffering as there was no chance of a pain free life for her. |

A group of 35 boars have arrived at the rescue as the result of uncontrolled breeding. The females from the failed 'sanctuary' are being cared for by a network of caring, experienced guinea pig lovers. Sadly it has come to light that there are more pigs than the rescuers were led to believe and there may be a repeat of the shameful situation soon when the pigs that were hidden away continue to be bred. All are suffering from long term mite infestation and multiple bite wounds where the males fought over dominance and females.
24/11/11 - Eleven of the males have moved on to rescue spaces in Crawley, Surrey. Many thanks to Crawley and Piggie Palace GPRs, Jenny, Liz and Sandra for helping!
2/12/11 - 15 of the boars that have recovered sufficiently to be able to move on to available rescue space have gone to Yate Small Animal Foster and Rehome based in Bristol. Thank you to Tracey for helping give these boys a second chance.

A dog found an interesting box in a country park, inside two mite infested females with badly overgrown nails. They have quite obviously been kept in a very small cage where they have just sat and ate - the larger sow is 1420g!!! Not a nice meaty, fit feeling pig at all, she's all wobbly and squishy.
Too much of an inconvenience to bother phoning a rescue so dumped instead. They have been bathed and plucked as their coat was falling out in clumps and are on a strict piggy fitness diet, once they have cleared quarantine and are not quite so terrified hopefully they will make lovely cuddly pets.
UPDATE: 19/5/11 The girls, now named Mattie & Minx, are making good progress, Minx's poor coat and skin condition are improving though it will be sometime yet before they will be ready for rehoming. Both are now sleeker and fitter, and far more confident.
UPDATE: 6/6/11 Mattie & Minx will be ready for adoption next week as they have made great progress since arriving at the rescue.
